History

This burial ground west of Newburg in southern Comanche County is tied to the South Leon settlement and its church. The area was settled in December 1854—first known as South Leon for the nearby South Leon River—when Jesse M. Mercer helped organize a colony here. The South Leon Baptist Church, formed under a brush arbor in 1857 by Rev. Richard Howard and eight charter members, was the first Baptist church in Comanche County; disrupted by frontier conflict in 1859, it was reorganized in 1872. The community's post office was renamed Newburg in 1884.
