History
The John E. Mitchell Company arrived in Dallas from St. Louis in 1928 and built a factory at 3800 Commerce Street, designed by J.A. Pitzinger, to produce cotton gins and farm implements; Dallas was then the country's largest producer of cotton-gin machinery. During World War II the plant became a defense contractor, manufacturing anti-submarine projectiles, anti-aircraft shells and rocket nozzles. The company faded after 1972 and the building was listed on the National Register in 1991.
