History

The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University holds one of the largest collections of Spanish art outside Spain, assembled by oil financier Algur H. Meadows, who was inspired by visits to Madrid's Prado in the 1950s. Through the Meadows Foundation he funded the museum, which opened April 3, 1965, in honor of his late wife Virginia. Its current neo-Palladian building opened in 2001, and the collection spans the 10th to 21st centuries with works by El Greco, Velazquez, Goya, Sorolla, and Picasso.
