History

The Sixth Floor Museum opened February 20, 1989, on the sixth floor of the former Texas School Book Depository at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, the building from which the shots that killed President John F. Kennedy were fired on November 22, 1963. Dallas County saved the 1903 building through a 1977 bond purchase after the depository company moved out and demolition was debated. Its exhibit "John F. Kennedy and the Memory of a Nation" and collections of more than 90,000 items chronicle Kennedy's life, death, and legacy.
