History

Sparenberg Cemetery serves the small farming community of Sparenberg in southeastern Dawson County, about fourteen miles southeast of Lamesa. The settlement took its name from George Sparenberg and grew up around a store and post office opened in 1903; by the late 1940s it supported a school, three churches, and several businesses before declining after the post office closed in 1954. The cemetery remains a burial ground for the families of this once-thriving cotton-farming community.
