History
Dickens County was created in 1876 and organized in 1891, taking its name from J. Dickens, said to have died in the defense of the Alamo. When the county was organized, Espuela-on land of the Espuela (Spur) Ranch-was first designated county seat, but disputes led to an 1892 election that instead made the town of Dickens the seat. Large operations such as the Matador and Spur ranches long dominated the county's land.
