Constructed in the Classical Revival style of dark brick with cast stone details. A grand entry stair flanked by brick knee walls leads to an entry porch at a wide central bay defined by tall pilasters, ornamental brickwork and an ornamental parapet. The base of the building is defined by horizontal brick courses and a cast stone band. In 1938 a rear addition was constructed and connected to the main courthouse with a hyphen.

The Duval County Courthouse in San Diego was built in 1916 to a Classical Revival design by the Fort Worth firm Sanguinet, Staats & Gottlieb. It replaced an 1879 two-story frame courthouse, designed by B. H. Heldenfeld, that burned in 1914. San Diego had served as the county seat since Duval County was organized in 1876.
