History

Benavides Cemetery serves the town of Benavides in south-central Duval County, a community that grew up around the railroad in the early 1880s. The town was founded about 1880 and named for the prominent Benavides family; Placido Benavides donated eighty acres to the community in 1881. Benavides developed into a shipping and trade center for the surrounding ranching region, and its cemetery holds many of the families who built the town.
