History

The Piedras Pintas Cemetery is nearly all that remains of Piedras Pintas, a once-prosperous town a short distance from Benavides in central Duval County. The area is historically significant as the site of the first oil field in Duval County, developed around 1905 to 1907 and among the earliest in Texas. As the railroad drew residents toward the more prosperous town of Benavides, Piedras Pintas declined, leaving the fenced, privately held cemetery as the community's chief surviving landmark.
