History

Tinney Piedras Pintas Cemetery, near Benavides in Duval County, is nearly all that survives of Piedras Pintas, once a prospering town tied to the surrounding oilfield. The Piedras Pintas field drew attention early in the 20th century, and in 1907 tax collector John Cleary was assassinated in a dispute connected to its oil interests. The town faded and by the late 1940s was no longer shown on maps, leaving the fenced burial ground as the community's chief remaining trace.
