History
The El Paso County Historical Society's Burges House serves as the headquarters, museum, and research library of the society in El Paso's Sunset Heights Historic District. The Classical Revival home, distinguished by four large front columns, was built for attorney Richard Fenner Burges, who as city attorney wrote El Paso's charter in 1908, later served in the Texas Legislature, and helped advance projects such as Carlsbad Caverns and Elephant Butte Dam. Now an El Paso Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1993, the house has anchored the historical society since 1954 and holds the Jane Burges Perrenot Research Library.
