History
German immigrant and master stonemason Heinrich Ludwig Kreische bought 172 acres south of La Grange in 1849 and built a three-story stone house for his family. Using spring water from the ravine below, in the 1860s he founded one of Texas's earliest commercial breweries, which grew to be the state's third largest before closing after his death in 1882. The brewery and house were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
