History
Perched on a sandstone bluff about 200 feet above the Colorado River south of La Grange, Monument Hill holds a common tomb reinterring Texans killed in the 1842 Dawson Massacre and the Mier Expedition's "Black Bean Episode," first vaulted there in 1848. German immigrant Heinrich Ludwig Kreische, who bought the bluff in 1849, built one of Texas's first commercial breweries nearby in the 1860s; by 1878 it had become the state's third-largest brewing operation. The Texas Historical Commission has managed the two sites since 2019.
