History

The Castleman Cemetery near Flatonia is associated with the pioneer Castleman family of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colony. Sylvanus Castleman paid Austin for surveying his land in 1822 and received title to tracts along the Colorado River on July 7, 1824. His son Jacob Castleman served with the Texas army during the 1836 San Jacinto campaign and was honored with a state historical marker erected in 1962.
