History
The ten-story Jean Lafitte Hotel opened in 1927 at 2101 Church Street as Galveston Island's first high-rise building. Designed by Scottish-born architect Andrew Fraser and named for the pirate who once made Galveston his base, it was one of the urban "skyscraper" hotels built to serve business travelers across 1920s Texas. Damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008, it was purchased by the ITEX Group in 2009 and rehabilitated into commercial space and apartments. It is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
