History

The Scottish Rite Cathedral at 2128 Church Street was built in 1928-1929 in the Art Deco style by Houston architect Alfred C. Finn, with H. Jordan MacKenzie as lead designer. It replaced Harmony Hall, an earlier Masonic building that was destroyed by fire in 1928, and was deliberately built of marble, stone, brick and steel to be fireproof. The cathedral contains a vaudeville-era theater seating more than 360 and the noted Egyptian Room, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
