History

The site near 21st and Post Office streets traces to early Galveston resident John Henry Illies, whose family home there was struck by a Union artillery shell during the Battle of Galveston on January 1, 1863. In 1929 architect Donald McKenzie Jr. razed the older 1867 Illies Building and erected a five-story apartment house he named the Justine Apartments in honor of his mother. The building offered modern amenities such as an elevator, terrazzo floors and Murphy beds, and it remains in use as apartments. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
