History
This commercial building was constructed in 1878 by Robert Furniss Martin, who operated it as a furniture store. In the early 1890s M.W. Shaw, founder of the first jewelry store in Texas, bought the property and ran his jewelry business there with his brother-in-law, a master watchmaker, until his death in 1922. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Galveston's 1984 Central Business District Multiple Resource Area.
