History

The Star Drug Store building was erected in 1886 by the Scanlon family, who hired architect Nicholas Clayton to design it together with the adjoining Levy Building. Druggist Charles J. Michaelis bought the store in 1906 and installed its horseshoe-shaped tile soda-fountain counter in 1917. Under later owners George Clampitt and Grady Dickinson the store became the first desegregated lunch counter in Galveston, and it is often called the oldest drug store in Texas. Located on 23rd Street in the Strand Historic District, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
