History

The City National Bank was founded in 1907 by cotton and finance magnate William Lewis Moody Jr., and its landmark building at 2219 Avenue D (Market Street) in downtown Galveston opened on August 12, 1920. Designed by the Chicago firm Weary & Alford in a Classical Revival style, the roughly $200,000 structure features a pedimented portico with Corinthian columns and a barrel-vaulted banking hall. The bank was renamed Moody National Bank in 1953, and the building later served as the Galveston County Historical Museum until it was damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
