History

The United States National Bank of Galveston traces to a bank founded in 1874 by the Kempner family as the Island City Savings Bank, which took the United States National Bank name in 1923. Its twelve-story granite-faced building at Market and 22nd Streets, designed in the Italian Renaissance style by New York architect Alfred C. Bossom with Sanguinet, Staats & Herrick as associate architects, opened to the public on March 21, 1925. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
