History

The Galveston Railroad Museum occupies the former Santa Fe Union Station, whose passenger depot was built in 1913 and expanded in 1932 with an 11-story Art Deco tower. Established through a Moody Foundation grant initiated by Mary Moody Northen in 1972, the museum opened in 1983 on the site of the 1932 depot and railyard. After Hurricane Ike flooded it with 10 feet of salt water in 2008, it reopened in 2011 and today displays dozens of locomotives and rail cars.
