History

Church Square is one of the seven public squares laid out around the Gonzales courthouse under the town plan surveyed by the Mexican government in 1832—a plan Gonzales still follows, uniquely among Texas towns. The original Gonzales tract of four square leagues set aside 49 inner-city blocks, seven of them reserved for public use. Church Square is recognized with a Texas historical marker.
