History

Circuit-riding Methodist preachers held services near Gonzales as early as 1824, and conference records show Rev. J. P. Sneed organized a Methodist church at Gonzales in 1841. Rev. John Wesley DeVilbiss furthered the organization in 1843, after which the congregation had its own minister and has met on this site ever since. The Texas Historical Commission erected the marker in 1991.
