History
Leander Calvin Cunningham (1810-1896), a Tennessee native and veteran of San Jacinto, came to Texas in 1833 and became the first lawyer at Mina (present Bastrop), where he ran a mercantile business and served three terms as county judge. In 1874 he became the first railroad agent at Waelder in Gonzales County for the Southern Pacific, a post he held for fourteen years. His 1936 state marker stands in the Waelder Cemetery.
