History
This marker commemorates the opening skirmish of the Texas Revolution. Gonzales colonists refused to surrender a small cannon that Mexican authorities had lent them years earlier for defense against Comanche raids, and on October 2, 1835, the settlers fired on the troops sent to reclaim it, flying a banner reading 'Come and Take It.' Though militarily minor, the fight marked the break between the colonists and the Mexican government and became known as the 'Lexington of Texas.' A Texas Centennial marker was placed in 1936.
