History

This cemetery is associated with the Monthalia Methodist Episcopal Church, which was organized with seventeen members in 1886 in the community of Monthalia, west of Gonzales. The congregation's first building was erected in 1889 between Monthalia and Cost, and the church property included an original cemetery; in 1913 the church relocated south of Highway 466 where a new cemetery was opened. The Monthalia community itself dated to settlement in the 1840s and grew around a church and Masonic lodge established in 1868.
