History

Hopkinsville was established in 1852 by Dennis Sheffield Hopkins on land bought from Thomas Zumwalt, five miles north of present-day Waelder near Copperas Creek, and its Masonic lodge organized in 1855. The town declined after the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway bypassed it and Waelder was founded in 1874, drawing away its residents and businesses. The cemetery, holding both Black and white burials, is among the few remains of the vanished town.
