History

Opened in 1836 as Houston's first city cemetery on land given by the Allen brothers who founded the city, this is the oldest cemetery in Houston. Nearly full by 1840, it holds veterans of the Texas Revolution, including signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, San Jacinto veterans, and city co-founder John Kirby Allen. Restored and renamed Founders Memorial Park in 1936, the two-acre site is a designated Historic Texas Cemetery and a public park.
