History

Old Tarrant Cemetery, about four miles north of Sulphur Springs on State Highway 19, marks the site of Tarrant, the first county seat of Hopkins County. The town was named for General Edward H. Tarrant, and by 1850 it was a thriving settlement with a school, mills, a Masonic lodge, a small Methodist college, and a newspaper. After the county seat moved to Sulphur Springs in 1871, Tarrant declined until only its church and cemetery remained, and a state historical marker was granted in 1975.
