History

This cemetery in north-central Hopkins County began as the Cherry Grove burial ground, named for the wild cherry trees that once grew nearby, and later became known as North Caney. A granite marker records the old North Caney Cemetery's founding in 1899, while the associated Cherry Grove Baptist Church was organized in 1885. When a new Cherry Grove cemetery was opened beside the rebuilt church in the 1950s, some families shifted their burials there, leaving the older ground reachable only through a pasture.
