History

The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum in Greenville was established in 1987 to preserve the history of Hunt County, with emphasis on the cotton industry and hometown military hero Audie Murphy. Cotton was the county's largest cash crop in the early 20th century, and Greenville was home to the world's largest inland cotton compress, which set world records in 1911 and 1912. An Audie Murphy section was added in 2000 to honor the Hunt County-born Medal of Honor recipient—the most decorated American soldier of World War II—and the grounds include the Hunt County War Memorial with a 10-foot bronze statue of Murphy.
