History

Van Sickle Cemetery preserves the burial ground of the vanished community of Van Sickle in south-central Hunt County, roughly eight miles south-southwest of Greenville. The community was named for Captain Benjamin Anderson VanSickle, a former Texas Ranger who moved to the area in 1862 and became its first postmaster when the Van Sickle's post office opened in 1877. By the 1890s the town supported Baptist, Methodist, and Christian churches, and VanSickle himself is buried in the cemetery that carries his name.
