History
The Ward-Coates Home, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark near La Ward, was built in the 1860s by pioneer rancher Lafayette Ward, Sr., who had come from Missouri to Texas in 1836. The surrounding community of La Ward grew up in 1904 along the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway and took its name from the Ward family.
