Francitas

This burial ground near the Jackson–Matagorda county line is also known as the LaBauve Cemetery, after the Louisiana family who settled the area in the 1800s and were among the first interred here. Its other name comes from Francitas—Spanish for "Little France"—a townsite promoted after the railroad arrived in 1906 by Nebraska developers John G. Maher and William F. Schwind, whose Valley Fruit Farm and Garden Co. opened the community in December 1910. Francitas grew to roughly 450 residents within a year before declining, and the cemetery remains the resting place of many of its early French and Anglo settlers.
