Amargosa

Amargosa Cemetery serves the dispersed community of Amargosa in northwestern Jim Wells County, about eight miles northwest of Alice on Amargosa Creek. The site began as a ranch on the Tinaja de Lara grant that Manuel Barrera of Mier received in 1836 and by 1849 was a prominent South Texas ranch trading in wool and hides; Indian raids emptied it in the early 1850s. By 1877 Amargosa was a settlement of about 100 people with a school, but the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway bypassed it in 1898 and it faded to a rural community. Amargosa is Spanish for 'bitter.'
