History

The Layland Museum of History in Cleburne is housed in the 1905 Carnegie Library, a Classical Revival building by the firm Smith and Moore and the first structure in Cleburne designed by a professional architectural firm. The collection began in 1963 with a donation from businessman William J. Layland, and the museum gained full use of the building in 1978. It holds some 50,000 artifacts and 100,000 photographs, including General Patrick Cleburne's Colt pistol and saddle.
