History

The Choate Community Cemetery serves the small settlement of Choate, about seven miles southeast of Kenedy, named for prominent rancher James Monroe Choate. Many of its settlers came from Oklahoma, giving the area the nickname the 'Oklahoma' settlement, and were largely Baptists and Methodists; the community had a post office from 1902 to 1909 along with a store, school, church, and cotton gin. By the early 1980s two churches and this cemetery were among the few features remaining.
