History

This cemetery lies at Tigertown, a community on Sanders Creek about sixteen miles northwest of Paris in northwestern Lamar County. Originally called Cothran's Store for an early family, the settlement became known as Tigertown, reportedly after a circus poster in a local saloon, and by the 1890s it had general stores, a cotton gin, physicians, and Methodist and Presbyterian churches. Maps from the 1930s show a cemetery among the community's school, hotel and sawmills, and a burial ground still marked the site in later decades as the town declined.
