History

Mt. Vernon Cemetery recalls one of Lamar County's earliest settlements, the town of Mount Vernon, established in the late 1830s or early 1840s a few miles from present-day Paris. In June 1843 Mount Vernon briefly served as the county seat, complete with a log courthouse, until the seat was moved to Paris the following year. The town gradually faded and had vanished from maps by the 1930s, and a state historical marker was placed at the site in 1936. The cemetery endures as one of the few reminders of the vanished pioneer community.
