History
Joseph Lawrence (1800-1897), born in Buncombe County, North Carolina, came to Texas in 1835 and was at Washington-on-the-Brazos when Travis's couriers called for volunteers to relieve the Alamo. In 1848 he settled in Lavaca County, opening a plantation on Rocky Creek and helping establish the Hallettsville Masonic Lodge. When he died at ninety-seven, he was among the oldest surviving veterans of the Texas Revolution.
