History

Brown Chapel Cemetery adjoins Browns Chapel Methodist Church and appears to be the oldest African American cemetery in Lavaca County. It holds more than 250 graves, and its earliest marked burial is that of Robert Payne, who was eighty years old when he died in 1852. The cemetery stands as an important record of the county's early Black community.
