History

The community of Clegg, named for local rancher George Clegg, was platted in 1912 after Fort Worth land agent Harry Hyman bought and subdivided a tract of the J. M. Dobie ranch in southwestern Live Oak County. A post office and a Baptist congregation followed in 1913, and by the 1930s the town supported a school, stores, and a cotton gin. As the town faded after the 1940s—its school closing in 1948 and its Baptist church disbanding in 1958—the Clegg Cemetery remained as the community's principal surviving landmark.
