History
The Austin and Northwestern Railroad reached Llano in 1892, drawn by hopes of hauling newly discovered iron ore that never proved commercially viable. Llano's original depot burned in 1961, and in 2006 citizens erected the present building to house the visitor center, chamber of commerce, and railroad museum; the historic rail yard district is on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum displays a working telegraph, a railroad crossing signal, and other artifacts of Llano's rail era, with free admission.
