History

Kellyville, near Jefferson in Marion County, took its name from George Addison Kelly, whose foundry cast the cow bells used by ox-team freighters and, after 1860, produced the first modern plows made in Texas. The operation grew from Nash's earlier iron works, which the Kelly Plow Company acquired around 1863, and by 1880 the Kelly Iron Works, famous for its "Kelly Blue Plow," was the state's leading maker of farm implements. After the loss of cheap river transport and a fire, Kelly moved his plow production to Longview in 1882, and the town declined.
