History
Lockett Cemetery is the burial ground of the vanished Lockett community in Marion County, named for planter Royal Francis Lockett, who came from Georgia in the late 1850s and worked a plantation near the site. The oldest marked grave is that of Walter R. McGarity (1853–1862), a Lockett grandson, and six generations of Lockett descendants are interred here, along with a Union soldier who died on the plantation during the Civil War. A post office operated at Lockett from 1884 to 1903, but by the 1930s little remained beyond the cemetery, which relatives had fenced in 1961.
