History

Simmons Cemetery is the last surviving trace of the vanished Simmons community in northwestern Marion County. The settlement supported a one-teacher school of eleven pupils in 1899 but had dwindled to a cemetery and a few scattered dwellings by 1936, and by the early 1980s only the graveyard remained. Its markers, many bearing the Simmons surname, reach back into the 19th century.
