History

Pyland Cemetery near Avinger traces to 1862, when John D. Pyland traded 500 acres in Tarrant County for a like amount of William Johnson's land in Marion County and established adjoining Anglo and African American cemeteries on the property. The Black burial ground, Pyland Cemetery #2, holds the graves of formerly enslaved people who worked the plantation and later tenant farmers, with an earliest marked grave from 1889; the Texas Historical Commission erected a marker there in 2017.
