History

Mount Bethel Cemetery adjoins Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church on Farm Road 999 about eleven miles southwest of Carthage, near Gary. Five acres for a church, school, and cemetery were first donated by Isaac Pike, with additional land later given by J. R. Atkerson. The Mount Bethel area was settled before the Civil War and had a school by 1855; today more than 1,000 graves lie in the cemetery, one of the community's last surviving landmarks.
