History
This burial ground lies in the Long Branch settlement of southwestern Panola County, a community first settled before the Civil War and named for a long sandy arm of Murvaul Bayou; a post office opened there in 1858 and a Baptist church was organized in 1874. By 1914 Long Branch had grown to about 400 people with two churches, a bank, and a newspaper before timber depletion brought decline in the 1920s. The first grave in the Long Branch Cemetery was that of an infant in 1877, and the fenced, well-kept grounds remain a landmark of the vanished town.
